With an enviable racing record, the J-80 8m trailable keelboat is still the benchmark for one-design racers that double as a family dayboat, with accommodation for a 3-4 person crew. Easily controlled, forgiving and sea-kindly but at the same time incredibly exciting to sail and race, it has become the best selling sportsboat in Europe.
Despite the reputation for being safe and stable as a family day sailer (Cat B offshore classification thanks to it’s remarkable stability), the J-80 is known as a “wizard in light air” and very stable in heavy conditions (up to 30 knots), with speeds often exceeding 15–20 knots off the wind.
Tigh Soluis III is a “well kent face” around the Clyde and Holy Loch racing fraternity, and is currently looking for a new skipper to take her on to further glories. She comes with historical documentation including original VAT invoice (UK), and trailer cradle specification.
Key features of the J/80 include:
• Design & Performance: Designed by Rod Johnstone, it is a lightweight (1,315kg) fiberglass boat with a high ballast ratio (48%).
• Rigging: It features a fractional sloop rig with a retractable bowsprit for easy spinnaker handling.
• Versatility: Suitable for day sailing, training, and racing, with a large, comfortable cockpit.
• Accessibility: The boat is easy to trail on her double-axle trailer and can be launched via a single-point lifting system.
• Class Association: The J/80 has an active international one-design class with regular national and world championships.
